What age do senior discounts start?

There is no legal "senior" age for discounts. Each company picks its own. On this list the ages run from 50 to 65:

  • At 50, you qualify for 2 of the 45 offers.
  • At 55, you qualify for 15 of the 45 offers.
  • At 60, you qualify for 26 of the 45 offers.
  • At 62, you qualify for 32 of the 45 offers.
  • At 65, you qualify for 39 of the 45 offers, every one with an age on it.
  • The other 6 need an AARP membership instead of an age, and 4 more take either the age or an AARP card.

You don't have to be 50 to join AARP. Its own site says anyone 18 or older can buy a membership, so the AARP-member offers here are open to you at any age.

Membership is $15 for the first year if you sign up for automatic renewal, then $20 a year, according to AARP's membership page. Whether it pays depends on what you'd use. One rental car or a few hotel nights at an AARP rate can cover it.

The federal government uses 62 for the National Park Service's Senior Pass and 65 for half-fare transit. Medicare starts at 65. None of that binds a store, a restaurant or a phone company.

Questions people ask about senior discounts

Does Walmart have a senior discount?

No. Walmart publishes no senior discount. Its reduced-price Walmart+ Assist membership is for people who receive government assistance such as SNAP or Medicaid, whatever their age.

Does Amazon Prime have a discount for seniors?

No. Amazon's reduced Prime membership, Prime Access, is for people who receive government assistance such as SNAP, Medicaid or SSI, or whose household income is low enough. Age alone does not qualify.

Which restaurants have senior discounts?

Denny's and IHOP have 55+ menus, and Luby's has a $8.49 senior plate after 3 p.m. Denny's, Outback and Carrabba's take 10% to 15% off the check for AARP members. McDonald's, Burger King, Chick-fil-A and Culver's leave senior discounts to each restaurant's owner, so ask at the counter.

Do airlines give senior discounts?

Not in any way you can book. Southwest says it does not offer senior fares. Delta mentions senior discounts only "in certain markets" by phone, with no age or amount. AARP has no airline partner. The senior travel discounts that do exist are on trains, public transit, hotels and rental cars.

How to get a senior discount

  • Ask before you pay. Many discounts are given only when you ask, and some apply only on certain days or at certain locations.
  • Carry a photo ID with your birth date. A driver's license or state ID is usually enough. Online, the age check is often a box you tick, with ID asked for later.
  • Compare with the sale price. A senior rate on a hotel or a rental car is sometimes higher than that day's public sale or member rate. Check both.
  • Read "participating locations" literally. Franchise restaurants and stores set their own prices. The company's page may promise a discount the store down the road doesn't give.

How this list stays honest

Every offer here was read on the company's or agency's own website, and the source link goes to that page. If a company doesn't state a senior discount on its own site, it isn't listed, even when every other list includes it. Offers change without notice, so each card shows the month its source page was last read.

Spotted an offer that changed, or one that's missing? Tell me and include the company's page. I'll read it and update the card. Nothing on this page pays me: there are no affiliate links, and no company asked to be listed.
