Make Money Online 2026 (The Median Is Often Zero)

· Company Reviews
Prices and terms last verified August 15, 2026.

Making money online is real and the numbers are mostly small. Young Living reported a median of $23 across all US Brand Partners for 2022. Home Business Academy reported a median of $0 across all active affiliates in 2026. OPTAVIA reported 23.28% of US coaches earning nothing in 2025. Those are the companies' own published figures.

Make Money Online 2026 - Young Living reports a median of $23 across all Brand Partners and Home Business Academy reports $0

I have been doing this since 1996, and this is the page I would want somebody to have handed me in year one.

Not a discouragement. A calibration.

Everything below comes from documents the companies published themselves…

Their own filings are harsher than anything a critic would write. And far more useful.

Can You Actually Make Money Online?

Yes. And the honest distribution is much worse than the marketing and much better than the cynics.

Here is what companies report when they report against everybody, not only the people who already earned:

Company Year What they report against all participants
Young Living 2022 Average $881. Median $23
Home Business Academy 2026 Average $490. Median $0
OPTAVIA 2025 23.28% earned nothing. 0.15% earned over $200,000
Amway 2025 Average $750 for all US IBOs at Founders Platinum and below, before expenses
doTERRA 2025 58% of active US Wellness Advocates earned no commission

Read the Young Living row twice.

Average $881. Median $23.

That gap is the whole subject.

An average is dragged upward by a handful of large earners. A median tells you what the person in the middle actually got.

When those two are forty times apart, the average is not describing ANYBODY’s real experience.

I went through all twelve companies document by document in the income disclosure roundup, and the pattern holds across every one of them.

Why Every Number You See Is Bigger Than The Truth

This is the single most important thing on this page and almost nobody explains it.

Watch the denominator.

Most companies publish a median only for participants who already earned something. Everyone who made nothing is removed from the calculation before the median is taken.

Amway is the clearest worked example. Its 2025 US disclosure reports a $551 median for the top 50% of IBOs. The same document says 38% had no reported product sales, sponsored nobody, and received no payments at all.

So $551 is the median of the top half of the 62% who got paid something.

Not the median of everybody.

Not close to it.

doTERRA does the same thing: a $244 annual median for the top 50% of active Wellness Advocates who earned commission, disclosed alongside the fact that 58% of active Wellness Advocates earned none.

Once you see this you cannot unsee it, and it applies well beyond this industry. Any income figure quoted without its denominator is decoration.

What About Residual And Passive Income?

Recurring is real. Passive is marketing.

Recurring income genuinely exists.

If somebody subscribes to something you referred and stays subscribed, you get paid again. That is real, and it is why recurring offers are worth building toward.

What does not exist is the part where it continues without you.

Subscribers churn. You replace them or the number falls. The work changes shape - it stops being sales and becomes retention - but it does NOT stop.

The Home Business Academy figures are useful here precisely because that programme pays recurring commissions. Across all active affiliates in 2026 the average was $490 and the median was $0, and that is gross, before the subscription cost of staying qualified. I went through the whole compensation structure in the HBA review.

Recurring commission on nothing is still nothing.

How Long Does It Actually Take?

I will not give you a timeline, and anybody who does is guessing or selling.

What I can give you is the shape.

It took me years. Not months.

Most people I have watched start this stop before the point where it would have worked. That is not a character flaw. It is a reasonable response to doing something for eighteen months without result.

For a general sense of how businesses fare, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported first-year survival rates for new US establishments ranging from 71.4% to 84.6% depending on region and cohort year, in analysis published 4 March 2024. That is a wide range and it covers all businesses rather than online ones, so treat it as context rather than a forecast.

Anybody quoting you a single tidy failure percentage is rounding off reality.

What Actually Works, As Far As I Can Tell

Sell something specific to people who already want it, on a channel you control.

That is the whole method, and it is deliberately boring.

The income disclosures above are, read another way, a record of what happens when people skip that sentence and buy a system instead.

None of that promises you anything. It is just the version I have seen hold up over thirty years.

Where This Falls Short

These are MLM and affiliate disclosures, not all online income. Freelancing, e-commerce, software and services have completely different distributions and are not represented here at all. This page is honest about one slice of the market.

Different years, different countries, different definitions. Young Living’s figure is 2022, Amway’s and OPTAVIA’s are 2025, HBA’s is 2026. “Active” means something different in every document. They are not strictly comparable and I have not pretended otherwise.

Two of the documents are third-party copies. The Young Living statement in hand was republished by TruthInAdvertising.org rather than retrieved from Young Living, and the Amway copy was retrieved on 7 August 2026 because the live URL now errors on automated requests. That is weaker sourcing than a direct download and you should know it.

No income figure of my own appears here. Not because I have nothing to report, but because my results are not typical by definition, and putting them beside these medians would undo the entire point of the page.

The BLS survival data covers all US businesses. It is not online-specific and I have used it as context only.

Who This Is For, And Who It Isn’t

It fits you if you are deciding whether to start and want the real distribution before you commit money. It is in the table at the top, taken from the companies’ own filings.

It fits you if you have been at this a while and feel behind. Read the medians. You are probably closer to normal than the testimonials suggest, and that is worth knowing.

It does not fit you if you want to be told it is easy. Nothing in any of those documents supports that, including the documents published by companies with every incentive to make it look good.

It does not fit you if you are looking for a specific earnings promise. There isn’t one on this site and there is a full earnings disclosure explaining why.

Thirty years in, the thing I would tell my younger self is that the ceiling is real and so is the floor, and almost everybody selling you the ceiling is standing on the floor.

Read the disclosure before you read the testimonial. It takes ten minutes and it is the highest-return reading in this industry.

Online Income FAQs

Can you really make money online?

Yes, and most people who try make very little. Young Living reported a median of $23 across all US Brand Partners for 2022. OPTAVIA reported 23.28% of its US coaches earned nothing in 2025. Both figures come from the companies' own published disclosures.

How much do most people earn from an online business?

Where a company reports against everybody rather than only earners, the median usually lands between zero and a few hundred dollars a year. Amway reported average annual earnings of $750 for all US IBOs at Founders Platinum and below in 2025, before expenses.

Why do the income figures I see look so much better?

Because most disclosures report medians only for people who already earned something. Amway's $551 median is the median of the top half of the 62% who received at least one payment. Everyone who earned nothing sits outside that calculation entirely.

Is residual or passive income real?

Recurring income is real and it is not passive. It requires ongoing work to keep customers subscribed and to replace the ones who leave. Anything sold as money arriving while you sleep is describing the best month of an unusual outcome, not the normal one.

How long does it take to make money online?

Longer than any honest person will promise, because it depends on the offer, the channel and the effort. I will not give you a timeline. What I can tell you is that the businesses I have seen work took years rather than months, and most people stop before then.

Should kids try to make money online?

Anything involving a minor needs a parent handling contracts, tax and platform terms, since most platforms require users to be at least 13 and often 18 to earn. Treat it as a supervised project rather than an income plan, and read the platform's own rules first.

What is the most realistic way to earn online?

Selling something specific to people who already want it, on a channel you control. That is slower and less exciting than the alternatives and it is the version that survives. The income disclosures are essentially a record of what happens when people skip that step.
